BOOK REVIEW: The Realism Challenge by Mark Crilley

I have been sketching for over 6 month now and I am very eager to learn new techniques. I was absolutely fascinated by Mark Crilley‘s youtube videos and when The Realism Challenge book came out, I immediately knew it will be of a great value to me.

The book is very straightforward, the art supplies are minimal and all stated in the introduction. 30 lessons total are split into six sections. The lessons get harder as one progresses through the book. First part is dedicated to simulating shadows, second to adding color, in sections three through six we progress to hard surfaces such as glass, metal, wood , etc. Each lesson consists of 6 steps, the process is carefully described by the author. Each lesson is accompanied by the photograph of the progress. The lessons are easy to follow, but don’t be fooled it’s harder than it looks.

Overall impression: This book will be absolutely useful for anyone who strives to improve their drawing skills. It walks you through the process of sketching each object and offers valuable advice for each specific surface. Highly recommended.

I received this book from Blogging for Books in exchange for a fair and unbiased review.
