Making our Homeschool Work Zone nice and neat is the first challenge on the path to a reasonably decluttered home.
I swear we are not that bad in general and it gets cleaned regularily, but somehow it gets clogged up again. Cleaning shelf by shelf, which was done previously just doesn’t work. Picking up mess at “hot spots” doesn’t work. D. has a tendency to store things in little jars (is he secretly a mouse?).
So today we went Marie Kondo method on it (click to buy the book at book depository) aka throw away everything that doesn’t make you happy (I started with children’s items because I don’t have the guts to throw out mine yet :D). Kids, unexpectedly were excited. I guess even they were tired of rummaging for good 10 minutes in search of a copybook.
Here’s what it looked like before we got to it.
First thing we just dumped it all on the table
And started to work. We separated all the junk into categories : art supplies, home study, co-op study, keepsakes, obvious trash and suspected trash. It took us about two hours to go through it. We found some art work we thought we lost, we found letters from friends, we found a bowl full of Lego pieces, we found rocks (a lot of rocks!). We ended up taking out amount of paper refuse equal to at least two big garbage bags. A whole container of crayons remains was discovered and disposed of.
Here’s what our corner looks like now:
Kids were surprised to discover they didn’t have any good colored pencils left and hardly any markers (now I know why they keep coming after mine!) and that they have lots of copybooks started but never finished. A trip to the store is due to get some new art supplies, and they promised to pitch in with their pocket money. A new challenge for children : to keep it clean for at least a week (they might get a special treat if they do) and if they manage to do it for a month, then we will make it an even more special.
Today’s reward for all the hard work was taking tea in a candlelight (“light all the candles, mama! ” )
Now which room shall be the next?
